Apartment Tour Checklist – 15 Things to Inspect Before Moving In
I’ve seen way too many people move into an apartment, only to realize after paying that the place has problems they didn’t notice during the tour. Leaky pipes, hidden fees, bad neighbors—you name it.
A quick walkthrough isn’t enough. You need to inspect the apartment properly before signing anything. Here’s a 15-point checklist to help you spot red flags before you commit.
What to Check Before You Move In
1. Water Pressure & Plumbing
Turn on the taps. Check for weak pressure, slow drainage, or leaks under sinks.
2. Electrical Outlets & Lights
Plug in your phone charger to make sure the outlets actually work. Test the light switches too.
3. Cell Signal & Internet Access
Make a call inside the apartment. Weak signal? That could be a problem. Ask if fiber or good Wi-Fi options are available.
4. Walls, Ceilings & Floors
Look for cracks, water stains, or mold. These could mean structural issues or previous leaks.
5. Windows & Ventilation
Open every window to check if they work. No airflow means it’ll get stuffy fast.
6. Doors & Locks
Test the locks on the main door and rooms. A flimsy lock is a security risk.
7. Kitchen Appliances
If the apartment comes with a fridge or stove, test them to make sure they work.
8. Bathroom Condition
Flush the toilet, check for leaks, and inspect the shower. Poor water flow or moldy corners are bad signs.
9. Pests & Bugs
Look under sinks, inside cabinets, and along the walls for signs of roaches, ants, or rodents.
10. Noise Levels
Visit at different times of the day. What seems quiet in the afternoon might be noisy at night.
11. Security & Safety
Are there cameras, a security guard, or a gated entrance? If not, how safe is the area?
12. Parking & Visitor Rules
If you have a car, check for designated parking. Some places also have strict visitor rules.
13. Water & Electricity Supply
Ask how often water is available. Some areas have rationed supply. If electricity is prepaid, confirm how easy it is to buy tokens.
Ask about service charges, trash collection fees, or any extra costs. Some landlords conveniently forget to mention these.
15. Lease Terms & Exit Policy
Read the contract properly. If you need to leave early, will you lose your deposit? Any weird clauses?
