A power surge fried my chargers. Don’t let it happen to you

The other night, my chargers became casualties of a power surge. One second, they were working fine. The next? Completely dead. If you've ever dealt with random outages or voltage spikes, you know the pain of replacing electronics that shouldn’t have died in the first place.

So, let’s make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

Why Do Power Surges Happen?

Power surges are sudden spikes in voltage that can fry your devices. They can be caused by:

  • Power returning after an outage

  • Lightning strikes (even indirect ones)

  • Faulty wiring or overloaded circuits

And let’s be real. If you live somewhere with less than perfect electricity supply (which is practically almost everywhere in Nigeria), this is something you need to protect against.

Surge Protector or Voltage Stabilizer?

  • Use a surge protector if you want to shield your devices from sudden voltage spikes. This is essential for chargers, laptops, and gaming consoles.

  • Use a voltage stabilizer if you deal with frequent power fluctuations that could damage larger appliances like TVs, fridges, or air conditioners.

What I’m Using Now

After my chargers died, I got the Ellington 5-Way Surge Protector Extension Socket. It has built-in surge protection, five outlets, and individual switches for better control.

If your gadgets matter to you, protect them before a power surge decides otherwise.
